Christian Training For the Formerly Incarcerated
We believe that the Bible, as the inspired and inerrant Word of God, holds indisputable authority in our Christian ministry, guiding us in all matters of faith and conduct. We are deeply convinced of the need for Christian principles and lessons for the formerly incarcerated reintegrating back into society. Our program focuses on training the recently released in career, life skills, reintegration and spiritually. The process of reentry can be challenging and daunting for those who have served their time in prison, and it is crucial to provide them with Christian guidance and support rooted in biblical teachings. This includes weekly bible studies, attending and getting involved with a church weekly, weekly fellowship with other members of Brand 316 and an assigned Christian mentor that has a track record of living his life for Christ.
Please take the time to read through this so you can fully understand the value of this vital part of reintegration training.
As Christians, we understand the significant value and guidance we receive through constantly reading and studying the Bible. Weekly group bible studies are pivotal for the formerly incarcerated and successful reintegration for several reasons which include staying close with God, learning from His teachings, spiritual nourishment, encouragement, transformation, guidance, community and fellowship. Weekly bible studies are mandatory for members of Brand 316 because of the transformative power of spending time in the Bible studying God’s word. This also plays a significant role in lowering recidivism. Of course, we encourage our members to live every minute for Christ and this is one tool to encourage and learn how to do that better daily.
The number 316 in our name "Brand 316" holds great biblical significance, serving as a reminder of what Christ did for us and reinforcing the belief that through Him, all things are possible. John 3:16, the most well-known verse in the Bible, encapsulates the message of hope for all Christians. It speaks of God's immense love for the world, demonstrated by Him giving His only Son, so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. This verse serves as a foundation of hope, emphasizing our reliance on the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It also underscores the importance of extending the love of God to others as a reflection of our faith.
Staying Close with God: Weekly Bible studies enable our members to maintain a close relationship with God during daily life and also in a community setting. By dedicating regular time to study and reflect on His Word, individuals can deepen their understanding of His love, His will, and His plan for their lives. This ongoing connection with God is vital for their Christian growth, allowing them to draw strength, comfort, and guidance from Him as they navigate the challenges of reintegration. Bible studies allow members of Brand 316 to spend time together and learn from each other to grow in their Christian faith and also in their relationships with other brothers in Christ.
Learning from His Teachings: The Bible is a treasure trove of wisdom, knowledge, situational guidance and life lessons. Through weekly Bible studies, the formerly incarcerated have the opportunity to delve into the scriptures and gain insights into God's teachings and understand that we serve a God of second chances. They learn about His love, mercy, and desire for their individual success through Him. These teachings provide a moral and ethical framework that can guide their thoughts, actions, and decision-making processes, helping them make positive choices as they rebuild their lives. Members of Brand 316 are trained to make decisions that are smart, focused on the long term and most importantly focused on Honoring God.
Nourishment: Just as our physical bodies require regular nourishment, our Christian faith also needs fuel. Weekly Bible studies offer spiritual fuel by providing a space for our members to engage with scripture, meditate on its meaning, discuss their thoughts in a group setting and apply its principles to their lives. In a world that often promotes values contrary to those found in the Bible, these study sessions provide a source of spiritual renewal, refreshment, strength and encouragement.
Encouragement and Transformation: The Bible is filled with relatable stories of hope, redemption, and transformation. By studying this history, the formerly incarcerated can find encouragement in knowing that they too can experience God's grace and forgiveness. Some of the most influential people in the Bible served time in Prison and God still used them for His Glory. The scriptures offer examples of individuals who overcame adversity, changed their ways, and became instruments of positive change. Weekly Bible studies inspire participants to believe in their own potential for transformation and empower them to make positive changes in their lives.
Guidance: Reentering society after incarceration can be overwhelming, as the formerly incarcerated face numerous challenges and decisions. Bible studies offer guidance by providing clear moral principles and values that can inform their choices. The scriptures contain timeless truths that can help them navigate relationships, work, and everyday challenges. By studying and applying these teachings, the formerly incarcerated can make wise and Godly decisions, increasing their chances of successful reintegration and reaffirming their faith in Christ.
Community and Fellowship: Weekly Bible studies foster a sense of community and fellowship among the formerly incarcerated. These sessions provide a supportive environment where individuals can share their experiences, joys, and struggles. Many of the formerly incarcerated share the bond of having served time and share similar experiences once released. The bonds formed within these study groups offer encouragement, accountability, and a sense of belonging. The opportunity to connect with others who have similar experiences and a shared faith creates a support network that can strengthen individuals during their reentry process.
Accountability: Accountability is a crucial aspect of our weekly Bible studies for the formerly incarcerated. As faithful Christians, we understand the importance of holding ourselves and each other accountable in our walk with God. In the context of Bible studies, accountability serves as a means of ensuring that individuals stay committed to their spiritual growth and transformation. By participating in regular study sessions, individuals are encouraged to actively engage with scripture, reflect on its application to their lives, and share their progress and challenges with others in the group. This accountability fosters a sense of responsibility and encourages individuals to remain steadfast in their faith, making positive choices, and upholding the values and principles they learn from the Bible. By providing a supportive and accountable community, we aim to empower the formerly incarcerated to live in alignment with God's Word and experience lasting transformation in their lives.
The Prison Mentality…removed: Beyond the spiritual aspect, group Bible studies also provide a valuable social experience for the formerly incarcerated. Often, during their time in prison, trust and genuine connections with others are scarce due to the harsh environment and self-preservation mentality that develops. By participating in these group studies, individuals have the chance to interact with fellow Christians in a safe and supportive setting. This social time allows them to build authentic relationships, develop trust, and experience a sense of community that likely was lacking during incarceration.
We encourage group discussions during Bible studies because they create an environment where they can freely express their thoughts, ask questions, and engage in meaningful dialogue with others. These discussions foster a spirit of openness and learning, enabling participants to gain new perspectives and insights into their faith and personal struggles. The opportunity to share personal experiences, challenges, and victories builds camaraderie and reinforces the understanding that they are not alone in their journey towards reintegration.
Bible studies also create a platform for sharing vulnerability, a vital aspect of the healing and growth process for the formerly incarcerated. In prison, vulnerability is often seen as a weakness and is avoided as a survival mechanism. However, in the supportive atmosphere of our program, participants are encouraged to share their vulnerabilities, knowing they will be met with understanding and compassion. This fosters a culture of acceptance and empathy, allowing individuals to confront and heal from past traumas and negative experiences.
An important aspect of reintegration is shedding the prison mentality, which can be deeply ingrained after spending a significant amount of time behind bars. Group Bible studies are instrumental in helping the formerly incarcerated break free from this mindset. Through the teachings of Christ and the biblical principles shared in these studies, participants gain valuable insights into forgiveness, grace, and transformation and further develop their relationship with Jesus. They learn to embrace a new identity rooted in their faith, letting go of the mindset that held them captive in the past.
This shift in mindset is crucial for successful reintegration, enabling individuals to approach life with renewed hope, purpose, and a positive outlook. The safe and nurturing environment created in these studies fosters personal growth, spiritual development, and a sense of belonging. By embracing biblical teachings and letting go of the past, individuals can embark on a transformative journey towards successful reintegration into society, embracing a life filled with hope, purpose, and a stronger faith in Jesus Christ.

The journey of reintegration into society after incarceration can indeed be incredibly challenging, and Christian mentorship for the recently released is a key tool to long-term success. The stigma, shock of freedom, limited opportunities, and personal struggles that individuals face can create an overwhelming environment for the formerly incarcerated. Having a Christian mentor who genuinely cares about you as a person and wants you to succeed in all aspects of life is an invaluable resource. Someone to talk to who is willing to listen: One of the fundamental aspects of a caring mentor is their willingness to listen. After incarceration, individuals often experience feelings of isolation and a lack of understanding from others who may not have shared their experiences. Having a mentor who is genuinely there to listen without judgment provides a safe and supportive space for the recently released. Through open and honest communication, individuals can express their concerns, fears, and aspirations, ultimately helping them to process their emotions and work towards personal growth. There are several reasons this is important and we list some of them out below.
Emotional Support and Resilience: The emotional toll of incarceration and the challenges of reentry can be significant. A caring mentor provides emotional support, helping individuals navigate the complex emotions that arise during this transition. By offering guidance, encouragement, and understanding, mentors can help build emotional resilience in the face of adversity. They can teach coping strategies, provide reassurance during difficult times, and celebrate the successes, no matter how small they may seem. This emotional support is crucial in helping the recently released regain their self-esteem and confidence. An hour spent talking at a coffee shop every week can change someone’s life for the better because it shows that at least one person in this world is willing to dedicate time to help them.
Christ-focused decision making: A Christian mentor can provide guidance rooted in biblical principles, helping the recently released make Christ-focused decisions. This mentorship can facilitate a spiritual transformation, encouraging individuals to seek forgiveness, embrace redemption, and pursue a life aligned with Christian values. The mentor provides biblical teachings, leads by example and helps apply Christian principles to their decision-making processes, fostering spiritual growth and moral development.
Guidance in Setting Realistic Goals: After incarceration, individuals often struggle with setting realistic goals for their future. A caring mentor can play a vital role in this process by offering guidance and support. They can help the recently released identify their strengths, interests, and passions, and then assist in formulating achievable goals based on these factors. The mentor provides constructive feedback, helps break down long-term goals into manageable steps, and offers encouragement along the way. This guidance not only provides a sense of direction and purpose but also increases the chances of achieving these goals.
Building Healthy Relationships: Reestablishing healthy relationships is an essential aspect of successful reintegration. However, the challenges of building and maintaining positive connections outside of prison can be daunting. A caring mentor supports the recently released in developing healthy relationships by offering guidance on effective communication, conflict resolution, and building trust. By fostering healthy relationships, the mentor helps create a supportive network that contributes to the individual's overall well-being and success.
Accountability and Responsibility: Accountability is crucial for personal growth and successful reintegration. A caring mentor holds the member accountable for their actions and choices but in a trusting way so that the members of Brand 316 can and will trust them. They provide guidance on making responsible decisions and help them develop a sense of personal responsibility. By setting expectations and encouraging adherence to values, the mentor ensures that the individual understands the consequences of their actions and empowers them to make positive choices. Through accountability, the mentor helps break the cycle of negative behaviors and supports the individual in their journey towards a law-abiding and purposeful life. Sometimes things as simple as thinking through a decision can be the difference between success and failure.
Positive Role Modeling: Having a positive role model is highly influential in shaping behavior and beliefs. A caring mentor serves as a role model for the recently released, demonstrating what it means to live a successful and fulfilling life. By sharing their own experiences, the mentor provides hope and inspiration, showing that it is possible to overcome adversity and achieve personal growth. They embody the values and principles that the individual aspires to emulate, acting as a guiding light on the path to transformation. The mentor's positive influence can shape the recently released person's outlook, mindset, and actions, paving the way for a brighter future.
The importance of having a mentor who genuinely cares about the recently released as a person and wants them to succeed in all aspects of life cannot be overstated. Such a mentor provides a listening ear, emotional support, guidance rooted in Christian principles, help in setting realistic goals, assistance in building healthy relationships, accountability, and positive role modeling.
